Daimler Truck North America and Navistar are recalling 2,247 trucks and buses with driveshafts that could separate because a Dana Inc. supplier used non-conforming material in manufacturing.

Dana filed the recall July 10, naming Daimler Truck and Navistar as customers reporting that reported one drive shaft separation each. No other customers were named.

A broken driveshaft can separate and cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dana said certain driveshafts in two production lots between Aug. 5-10 and Sept. 8-14, 2022 contained non-conforming rolled metal tubes barred by Dana protocol. The supplier told Dana it has enhanced its process for identification and control to prevent a recurrence.

“The specified driveshafts do not meet specification and can break in certain high loading conditions, Dana said in its filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Daimler Truck files companion recalls

Two companion recalls filed by Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) said it had a total of 1,894 vehicles in the recall population. It listed 2023 models of Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. MC, MT 55G walk-in van chassis and S2C 106 conventional cab and chassis as well as the Freightliner M2 and Thomas Built Buses SAF-T-Liner C2.

DTNA said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries and knows of only one warranty claim. It thinks the recall population may be adjusted following cross-referencing of part serial numbers to truck VINs. DTNA will alert customers and dealers of the recall by first-class mail on Sept. 30.

Navistar International had not filed a companion recall with NHTSA as of Monday. It reported a single instance of drive shaft separation on May 25.

Dana began offering a remedy in limited quantities in July. The Dana recall number is 23E-052.
